The Art & Craft of Grant Proposal Writing

This class periodically is offered in the Fall semester

Instructor: Kent Hornberger
3 Credit Hours

Focused research and persuasive writing are essesntial to preparing successful grant proposals for your organization, cause or project.  This course will guide participants through prospect research and proposal development and will culminate in the writing and revising of a real-life proposal.

Leadership and Management in Nonprofit Organizations top

This course is offered in the FALL semester

Instructor: Sheryl Foster-Gadkari
3 credit hours 

This course addresses the role and scope of the nonprofit sector in the United States, as well as the leadership and management of NPOs within that sector. Topics include the economic and political scope of the independent sector, the role of volunteerism in voluntary organization management and leadership include the dynamic functions and membership structure of NPOs, especially staff, board, and other volunteer relations; governance and management of NPOs; resource mobilization; and program development, management, and evaluation.

American Philanthropy and Nonprofit Resource Development top

This course is offered in the SPRING semester

3 credit hours 

This course addresses the role and scope of philanthropy in the United States. It further examines the contemporary philanthropic landscape, giving special attention to charitable giving, both by institutions and individuals. This course also studies the effective management of development programs within a nonprofit organization, including the role of development and its relationship to public relations, marketing, and other revenue-generating activities. It examines how to plan and manage a fund development program and the ethical and legal issues in development. It includes studying various sources of funds, fund-raising programs (e.g., annual giving), fund-raising vehicles (e.g., mail solicitations and grant proposals), and the fund-raising process, from planning through donor relations and  recognition.

Staff Management Issues in NPOs top

This course is generally offered in the FALL semester.

Instructor: Emily Lane
1 credit hour or 1.4 CEUs

This course addresses fundamentals of staff supervision, such as balancing supervisory processes with coaching and counseling; selecting, hiring, evaluating, and terminating staff; and legal considerations that affect these procedures; and effective team building. Legal Issues in Governing and Managing NPOs top

This course is generally offered in the SPRING and FALL semesters

Instructor: Daniel Sise
1 credit hour

This course discusses the board as steward of the organization; director and officer liability; tax laws concerning charitable giving; legal issues in managing staff and volunteers (e.g., hiring, evaluating, and terminating employees); and the Missouri NPO law. Financial Issues in Managing NPOs top

This course is generally offered in the FALL semester

Instructor: Pamela Stuerke
1 credit hour

This course is intended for general staff and executives, as well as board members of NPOs, who must understand and apply financial knowledge in their management and governance roles. It will cover cash-flow analysis, budgeting, fund accounting, cost accounting, and understanding financial statements, including balance sheets, cash-flow statements, statements of activity, and operating and capital budgets. Materials for this class are provided at the first session.

Tuition for the above courses is based on the per-credit-hour rate for the 
current semester.
